Root Beer Cups?

Okay, as you know about a week ago I bought a case of root beer cups from Schwan’s – and, let me tell you, they were good. They were so good, in fact, that I want to learn to make my own. I’m not sure how I’ll do this but I’m going to figure something out, lol, and when I do I’ll post the recipe here.

As far as I know, regular vanilla ice cream should work but you shouldn’t use regular root beer. They use what tastes like root beer flavored ice with the ice cream, the reason I like this better is because it makes it easier for me to judge how long to put it in the microwave, and even better how long to freeze it so it’s solid enough to pack in bento. I figure if I make them big enough to fit in my hello kitty thermos, I can just pull one out of the freezer, pop it into the thermos and go and it’ll melt over the course of the day and by the time I’m ready to have bento it’ll be nice and melty but still cold if I play my cards right.

I’m gonna try it with that home-made root beer packet drink they sell at WalMart, double-strength, and see if it works. If it does, I’ll let you know!

Happy New Year – 2!

This is a fly by to say Happy Year of the Rat! This is the first year I’ve *really* celebrated this. Laota and I have been scouring the net since we’ve got no book money, looking for any and all information on how to celebrate spring festival properly.

One thing I’ve really grown fond of is the Kitchen God and the rituals that surround him – very cool. I didn’t know any of it, what were they teaching me in school!? All we *ever* did in school to celebrate ‘Chinese New Year’ was basically learn to wish you a happy new year inaccurately in Mandrin, have fortune cookies and make paper lanterns with construction paper. School is useless sometimes, lol.

At least I’ll be making lots of gyoza – which is a first for me, since I just learned how to make them. I wish I had connection on my laptop so I could upload pictures of my adorable dumplings and star-shaped mini lemon meringue pies. *sigh* Love. Food has really become my passion. I hope to have pics soon!

Schwan’s: Expensive but Worthwhile

Laota and I got our very first order from Schwan’s a couple of days ago, and man was it worth the money! First of all, frozen and pre-prepared food isn’t my thing, but with my busy schedual and no transportation ( it’s freezing out there! ), it’s harder and harder for me to go to the grocery storey, because I don’t want to walk a few miles in freezing weather, and if you’ve ever been to Missouri you know the smaller towns don’t have sidewalks most of the time, so you’re going mostly uphill right in the narrow road being passed by jerks who don’t care if they hit you with their pick-up trucks, all just to buy some chicken or milk. Plus, I’m finding it hard to even find time to pack my bento, which I adore doing.

So this is a nice alternative. When Laota and I get off work, it only takes about 10 minutes for us to heat up a meal with main course, side dish and veggie and it cuts down on mess so we don’t spend quite as much time with dishes. They even gave us a free 2 and a half pound tray of sweet and sour chicken with pineapple and peppers over rice because we’re new customers. How cool is that?
